Home News Business Opinion Sports Arts & Ideas Blogs Spymaster Warns of Georgian Attack

Military intelligence believes that Georgia might again attack South Ossetia, the pro-Moscow region over which the two countries fought a war last year, a powerful spy chief said Thursday.

Alexander Shlyakhturov, who in April took over command of the military’s Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU, said the situation was strained and accused NATO countries of continuing to supply arms to Georgia.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Another military campaign by Georgia against South Ossetia would be a catastrophically stupid blunder, unless Saakashvili has some iron-clad promises from NATO that they would come to Georgia's aid should a second attack against South Ossetia be attempted.

NATO is tweaking the Russian bear's nose, by its and Israel's military support to Georgia. One has to wonder just how long the military re-supply by NATO countries will be allowed to continue until Russia reacts, if not diplomatically, militarily.

Medvedev: Russia to use troops abroad only in "extreme emergency"

Russia may decide to use military forces abroad only in exceptional circumstances to protect its citizens, said President Dmitry Medvedev on Thursday.

Russia's State Duma, the lower house, in late October voted unanimously to pass a bill which the Kremlin said would lay the legal foundation for using troops abroad to prevent aggression by other states and to protect Russian citizens on foreign soil.

Russia 'simulates' nuclear attack on Poland

The armed forces are said to have carried out "war games" in which nuclear missiles were fired and troops practised an amphibious landing on the country's coast.

Documents obtained by Wprost, one of Poland's leading news magazines, said the exercise was carried out in conjunction with soldiers from Belarus.

The manoeuvres are thought to have been held in September and involved about 13,000 Russian and Belarusian troops.

Poland, which has strained relations with both countries, was cast as the "potential aggressor".

Polyus Gold (PLZL.MM) (PLZLq.L) plans to launch what will be Russia's largest gold mine, the $2.5 billion Natalka project, in 2012 or 2013, the company's chief executive said in a statement on Tuesday.

Polyus, which mines nearly a quarter of Russia's gold, expects the Natalka mine in the country's remote northeast to produce over 1.3 million ounces a year of the precious metal -- more than the company's entire forecast production for 2007.

Russia's Daring Vote

Russia's vote to endorse the Goldstone Gaza report in the United Nations Human Rights Council last Friday was an important, milestone event both for Palestine and for Russia. For Palestine, this vote opened a way to try and sentence Israeli mass-murderers, and thus ushered Israel into a new era of responsibility after a long period of Wild West-style, Colt-45 justice. For Russia, this vote has proved to its own country and to the world that it is free from American and Zionist diktat and able to navigate its own policy.

Russians deal Lieberman 'slap' by endorsing Goldstone report

Israel relayed a sharply worded protest to the Russian government following Russia's vote in favor of adopting the Goldstone report at the Human Rights Council in Geneva Friday, according to senior Foreign Ministry officials in Jerusalem.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman suffered a personal blow by the Russian vote, which went against the promises he received from his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, days prior to the vote at the United Nations body.

Russian officials clarified that Moscow would oppose any discussion of the Goldstone report by the UN Security Council, Israel Radio reported on Sunday night.

Ukraine-Russia tensions are simmering in Crimea

President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia issued a letter in August demanding policy reversals from a new Ukrainian government, including an end to its bid to join NATO. Russia Retains Option of Preemptive Nuclear Strike

According to the secretary if the Russian Security Council, the Russian government’s new review of its nuclear weapons policy retains and even expands the nation’s long-standing option to pre-emptively use nuclear weapons in warfare.

“Different variants are considered to allow the use of nuclear weapons depending on a certain situation and intentions of a would-be enemy,” the secretary insisted. Russia has insisted that it has the right to launch pre-emptive nuclear strikes since early 2008.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Russia resisting sanctions against Iran

Russia pushed back Tuesday at U.S. efforts to threaten tough new sanctions if Iran fails to prove its nuclear program is peaceful, a setback to the Obama administration's desire to present a united front with Moscow.

Russia to send navy to escort Abkhazia-bound ships

Russia may dispatch its navy ships to protect commercial vessels bound for a Russia-aligned separatist region in Georgia on the Black Sea, the Russian foreign minister said Friday.

Sergey Lavrov says the escort in neutral waters of the Black Sea might be needed to protect shipping from Georgian "provocations." He spoke Friday on a visit to Sukhumi, the capital of the separatist region of Abkhazia.

His statement about dispatching the navy ships to neutral waters marked a step beyond earlier Russian pledges to protect shipping in waters off Abkhazia's coast.

Nato commander warns of conflict with Russia in Arctic Circle

Competition for resources in the Arctic Circle could provoke conflict between Russia and Nato, a newly appointed commander at the alliance warned yesterday.

Admiral James Stavridis said that military activity and trade routes would also be potential sources of competition around the polar cap.

Washington seeks hegemony over South Caucasus

?he United States and Russia are in a race for control over energy resources, and all the processes in the South Caucasus should be considered in this context, Andranik Tevanyan, Director of the Political Economy center, told NEWS.am, commenting on the information on Pentagon’s plans to deploy military bases in Georgia by 2015.

According to him, the United States is trying to resolve all the problems in the South Caucasus at one time thereby ensuring its hegemony over the region and making one more step toward greatly desired energy resources. Tevanyan stressed that the military bases will not be aimed against any country – they are just supposed to enable Washington “to draw nearer” to the energy resources of Central Asia and Azerbaijan.

USA To Deploy Army Bases in Georgia To Rearm Nation's Army

If US congressmen approve the plan and Georgian officials support it, by 2015 there will be 25,000 American military officers in Georgia. As for the military bases, the US will build two land bases and one navy base on the territory of Georgia. The same number of bases Russia is building in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

There were no official comments either from Washington or from Tbilisi. Analysts believe that the issue with American bases in Georgia is connected with harsh comments from US State Secretary Hilary Clinton.

On September 21 (after the meeting with Mikhail Saakashvili) she said that the United States was not going to recognize independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Washington will do everything to prevent the world from recognizing these republics.

Georgia Says Russian Patrols Off Abkhazia Show Military Aims

Georgia’s Foreign Ministry said the start of Russian coast guard patrols in the Black Sea off the separatist Georgian region of Abkhazia shows that Russia’s aim in a 2008 war was to boost its military presence in the area.

The Russian coast guard vessel Novorossiisk began patrolling off Abkhazia, Russian state television reported today, adding that the ship is one of as many of 10 that will be deployed in Abkhaz waters.

What a Revamped U.S. Missile Shield Might Look Like

Details are now emerging on the Obama administration’s plans to revamp missile defense to better counter the emerging Iranian missile threat.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates offered the new rationale.

“Over the last few years, we have made great strides with missile defense, particularly in our ability to counter short-and-medium-range missiles,” he said. “We now have proven capabilities to intercept these ballistic missiles with land-and-sea-based interceptors supported by much-improved sensors. These capabilities offer a variety of options to detect, track and shoot down enemy missiles. This allows us to deploy a distributive sensor network rather than a single fixed site, like the kind slated for the Czech Republic, enabling greater survivability and adaptability.”

Obama Missile Plan Wins Russia Praise, No Iran Shift

President Barack Obama’s decision to scrap a U.S. missile defense system in eastern Europe won praise from Russian leaders. What it didn’t win was a sign that they will cooperate to thwart Iran’s nuclear program.

Russia will support Iran, Israel wants war

Russia hints it will support Iran, not oil embargo
By Steven Edwards,September 10, 2009
UNITED NATIONS — Russia on Thursday threw a wrench into U.S. President Barack Obama's plans to corner Iran over its nuclear program, ruling out new sanctions against the Islamic republic.
The new standoff comes as U.S. intelligence findings say Iran is now ready to take the final leap toward developing a nuclear bomb, according to a U.S. presentation to the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog organization. It also complicates U.S. efforts to convince Israel, which Iran speaks of as an enemy, to hold off on any military strike against Iranian nuclear facilities by giving diplomacy more time to work.

Netanyahu draws fire in Israel over secret trip

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew the wrath of Israel's most influential newspapers on Thursday over what they described as lies issued by his office about a secret flight to Russia.

Netanyahu's first major media fiasco since taking office six months ago began with a simple question many Israelis, using their leader's nickname, asked on Monday: Where's Bibi?

Why are the Russians Digging Tunnels in Abkhazia?

Following Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s visit to the occupied Georgian province of Abkhazia in late August 2008, the Kremlin appears to be intensifying its military preparations in the South Caucasus.

On September 4, Georgian newspapers and TV channels reported that “the Russian occupation forces have been engaged for two months in constructing a one-kilometer-long tunnel deep in the Ochamchire district. Allegedly, the construction is highly secretive, only Russian military are employed and the local residents are not even allowed to approach the construction site. The Russians will use the tunnel to deploy military equipment and munitions.”

Webmaster's Commentary:

It looks like Georgia is laying the propaganda groundwork for another military confrontation with Russia.

Black Sea Port Is Flash Point for Georgia and Russia

Rising tensions between Russia and Georgia over shipping rights to a breakaway Georgian region have opened a potential new theater for conflict between the countries, a little more than a year after they went to war.

Webmaster's Commentary:

When Russia is engaged in a military conflict with Georgia, and the destabilization of Pakistan gets worse, look for a potential attack against Iran by that time.

Those two issues, taken together, will mean that Russia would be hard-pressed to re-supply Iran by land.

Lawmakers OK Kremlin bill on military force abroad

A Kremlin bill expanding the legal reasons for using military force abroad won a quick preliminary approval in the lower house of parliament Wednesday.

The bill would allow the president to send troops outside the nation's border to fend off attacks on the Russian military, deter aggression against another state, protect Russian citizens, combat pirates and protect shipping.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Looks like Russia is getting ready to rumble, relative to the terms of engagement for their military.

Confronting Russia? US Marines In The Caucasus

The redeployment of U.S. Marines to Georgia, then, is indicative of a continuous effort by the Pentagon ranging over more than seven years to prepare the Georgian armed forces an American and NATO proxy army for wars abroad and in the South Caucasus alike.

The Pentagon and NATO have acquired seven new military bases in Bulgaria and Romania in recent years, including air bases for the transit of troops and weapons to Georgia and Afghanistan as well as for potential bombing runs against other nations such as Iran.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Looks as though the US is on a war footing for what could be decades, if it doesn't bankrupt itself first, which is a very real possibility.

Why 'GQ' Doesn't Want Russians To Read Its Story

Yes, it would appear that the FSB and Putin perpetrated the Moscow apartment bombings to consolidate power and fight the "muslim insurgents" in Chechnya who are reportedly backed by the CIA and MOSSAD. Russia's 911.

The parallels between the Moscow apartment bombings and 911 are really amazing: both were "inside jobs", coups to propel, consolidate a cabal into power. In Russia Putin, and here in the United States and the west the Bush family and his erstwhile allies the Israelis and their bankers; both using the muslim "strawman" as the boogie man to divert attention away from what was really happening.

Russia Threatens ‘Armed Incident’ Over Georgian Blockade of Abkhazia

Russia’s Foreign Ministry today warned that Georgia’s continued blockade of their mutual neighbor Abkhazia could end with “a serious armed incident.” Georgia’s Navy has been chasing cargo ships away from the Abkhaz Republic, and has recently captured two ships including an fuel tanker from Turkey.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Why Georgia is attempting to "bait" Russia into a military confrontation makes no sense, except for one possibility.

If Russia is involved in a major military altercation with Georgia, and Pakistan becomes even more destabilized than it currently is, Russia would be hard-pressed to supply Iran militarily by ground if there is a US/Israeli strike against Iran.

Russia warns Georgia against Abkhaz 'sea blockade'

A Russian official has warned Georgia that attempts to block ships from reaching a Moscow-aligned separatist region of Georgia could end in military intervention.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Mikheil Saakashvili wouldn't be doing this if he didn't believe for one second that he can rely on certain "promises" from the West in case there is real military confrontation with Russia.

One has to wonder just what those "promises" might be.

Abkhaz rebels threaten to destroy Georgian ships

Abkhazia on Wednesday threatened to destroy any any Georgian ship violating the de-facto sea borders of the Georgian rebel region, in a major escalation of a row with Tbilisi over shipping in the area.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This situation appears about to get ugly, very quickly.

Abkhazia threatens Georgian ships as possibility of Black Sea naval skirmish rises

Sergey Bagapsh, president of the Russian-backed statelet of Abkhazia, warned on Wednesday his tiny navy would "destroy" any Georgian vessels straying into Abkhaz territorial waters.

His dramatic threat followed Georgia's recent seizure of several cargo vessels on their way to and from Abkhazia. In an interview with Russian news agency Interfax, Mr Bagapsh described the seizures as "piracy," requiring what he called an "adequate response."

Experts estimate Abkhazia's navy numbers not more than half a dozen vessels.

In practice, they say, Russian vessels sailing under an Abkhaz flag would be likely to get involved in any standoffs.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Sergey Bagapsh would not be making these threats without the blessings of Moscow, knowing that Moscow will back them up militarily 100% should there be an escalation of hostilities.

Russia condemns Georgia's attempts to seize ships off Abkhazia

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday Georgia's attempts to seize ships off the Abkhazian coast could lead to new armed conflicts.

"Aside from interrupting international maritime shipping, these actions of the Georgian leadership are an attempt to impose a blockade of the Abkhazian coast, which could lead to the deterioration of the situation in the region and new military conflicts," the Foreign Ministry's spokesman Andrei Nesterenko told a news conference in Moscow.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If there is a major military confrontation between Russia, Georgia, and perhaps the Ukraine, coupled with even more destabilization in Pakistan, Russia would be unable to supply military aid to Iran by land in the event of a US/Israeli attack against it.

'Israel behind Russian ship hijacking'

The conspiracy theory which names Israel as the mastermind behind the mysterious hijacking of a Russian freighter in July appears to be gaining traction, with the European Union's rapporteur on piracy, Admiral Tarmo Kouts, expressing his support for that version of events.

Abkhaz leader orders destruction of Georgian ships violating sea border

The leader of Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia, Sergei Bagapsh, on Wednesday ordered the destruction of Georgian ships entering the rebel region's claimed territorial waters, the Interfax news agency reported.

"I would like to emphasize that the matter involves exclusively the Abkhaz Navy. No Russian naval forces have been employed or will be employed to resolve this issue," he added.

Webmaster's Commentary:

It is obvious that Abkhaz's Sergei Bagapsh believes thoroughly that he has Moscow's blessing on this endeavor.

Putin Triumphing Over Zionist-Controlled West

VLADIMIR PUTIN’S METEORIC RISE TO POWER began in 1996 when he was invited to Moscow from St Petersburg in his role as deputy mayor to become a member of Yeltsin’s inner circle known as “the family.” Impressed with his administrative abilities, his cool efficiency, and apparent loyalty, Yeltsin appointed Putin as the deputy head of his presidential administration.

In this position, Putin kept a low profile. Far from being charismatic, with his expressionless mask-like face, rarely smiling, and speaking softly, Putin became known amongst his peers as the “grey cardinal” - a man wielding power behind the scenes. (Putin’s personal style has since changed into a charismatic, uninhibited and aggressive style.)

Russia to protect ships bound for Abkhazia

Russian border guards will help protect ships bound for Georgia's rebel Abkhazia region, the republic's border guard chief Zurab Marganiya says.

Webmaster's Commentary:

As reported on 21 August, 2009 in

http://news.antiwar.com/2009/08/21/georgia-seizes-cargo-ships-presses-naval-blockade-on-abkhazia/

"The Georgian government yesterday confirmed to the Agence-France Presse that it had captured two cargo ships in the Black Sea, which it accused of attempted to break their naval blockade by visiting the Republic of Abkhazia."

Any naval blockade is an act of war, period, end of discussion. It was only a matter of time before Russia would respond to it.

Russia and Ukraine in Intensifying Standoff

President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia denounced Ukraine this month for “anti-Russian” policies, citing in particular its “incessant attempts” to harass Russia’s naval base in Sevastopol. Mr. Medvedev condemned Ukraine’s bid for NATO membership and its support for Georgia, and said he would not send an ambassador to Ukraine.

Red Army troops raped even Russian women as they freed them from camps

Beevor - who was educated at Sandhurst and served in the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own), an elite cavalry regiment - says details of the Soviet soldiers' behaviour have forced him to revise his view of human nature.

Webmaster's Commentary:

All war should force you to revise your view of human nature.

And while it is indeed refreshing to a story about WW2 where someone other than the Germans are the villains and someone other than Jews are the victims, I have to wonder at the timing of this push to demonize Russia in the larger context of what is clearly a plan to revive the cold war!

Russian press allege Mossad connection to 'Arctic Sea' hijacking.

A Russian newspaper claimed Friday that suspected pirates who boarded the freighter Arctic Sea were actually agents of the Israeli secret service trying to stop it smuggling arms to Iran. According to Russian media, the Arctic Sea may have been carrying illegal X-55 cruise missiles destined for Iran hidden among its cargo of lumber.

Men acting on the behalf of the Israeli Mossad secret service commandeered the ship to divert the weapons away from Israel's regional enemy, the daily Novaya Gazeta said.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Regasrdless of the reasons, this is piracy in international waters, and as was the case when Israel hijacked the aid ship with former congresswomen Cynthia McKinney on it, the same US that gleefully gunned down Somali pirates will do nothing at all.

Aug 23 07:58

Newspaper confirmed the involvement of Mossad in the kidnapping of Russian cargo ship

According to sources, the Nezavisimaya Gazeta newspaper that the persons who are suspected pirates who boarded the cargo ship "Arctic Sea" In fact, members of the Israeli intelligence (Mossad) were trying to prevent the ship from the transfer of weapons to Iran.

The ship had disappeared more than three weeks of monitoring off the west coast of Africa and the Russian forces to free the crew of 15 sailors Russia on Monday, near the Cape Verde.

The media reported that Russia may have been the ship "Arctic Sea" cruise missile X-55 illegally hidden among a load of sawdust.

Webmaster's Commentary:

This reminds me of the strange case of EgyptAir flight 880, which made one unscheduled stop to pick up an unknown cargo, and was carrying several top Egyptian Military officers among the passengers. Blamed on the suicide of the pilot, the aftermath of the crash was notable for the employment of a foreign salvage company experienced in the deep water recovery of radioactive cargoes.

Georgia Seizes Cargo Ships, Presses Naval Blockade on Abkhazia

Abkhazia, predictably, was none to pleased with the capture of the ships: one a Turkish tanker delivering fuel and the other a Cambodian ship with a Syrian crew which was delivering scrap metal, and threatened a “proportionate response” against Georgia for the blockade.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A naval blockade is an act of war.

One has to wonder just how long this will be allowed to last before Russia intervenes.

Georgia seizes ships

GEORGIA said Thursday it had seized two cargo ships visiting its rebel Abkhazia region this week, as it steps up efforts to enforce a naval blockade of the Moscow-backed breakaway province.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Memo to Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili: just when I think it is humanly impossible to do anything more abysmally idiotic than you have already done with the military conflicts you initiated against Abkhazia and South Ossetia, you continue to amaze me.

Just in case you have forgotten, a naval blockade is an act of war.

Do you really, really want to engage in yet another military misadventure with Russia?!?!?

And please, God, what did elements in the west and NATO give this clown to make him think he could actually pull off such a naval blockage against Russia-backed Abkhazia?

FLASHBACK - Red, White and Blue Storm Rising

It is said that art often must imitate life. In the case of Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising", the motives and actions of the fictionalized USSR line up rather nicely with those of the real life USA. And therein lies a warning for those who think fake terror is the ideal tool with which to rule. For in Clancy's book, following a costly and bloody war, the fictionalized USSR is no better off than when it started, still without oil, still without money, and with a military coup on top of it all.

Life imitates art?

I hope not.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev held talks Tuesday with Israeli President Shimon Peres on efforts to check Iran's nuclear program, stalled Mideast peace talks and other issues, the Kremlin said.

The informal meeting got under way at Medvedev's official residence in Sochi on Russia's Black Sea coast and was also to focus on plans long in the works for Moscow to host an international Mideast peace conference.

Dostoyevsky on the Jewish Question

Fyodor Dostoyevsky left us a prophecy of the threat to Christian civilization by emancipated Jewry.

In his book, Diary Of A Writer, published in 1877, Dostoevsky penned a journal entry entitled "The Jewish Question." With alarming and frightening foresight, by which he penetrated into today’s events, Dostoevsky predicted a growing domination over social and political affairs by the Jews with their newly acquired rights:

“The Jews look forward to world domination. This requires them to maintain their own close-knit identity. If the Jews are given equal legal rights in Russia, but are allowed to keep their ‘State within a State,’ they would be more privileged than the Russians. The consequences of this situation are already clear in Europe.”

Caucasus: The War That Was, The World War That Might Have Been

Abkhazia and South Ossetia are of course in the South Caucasus and not in Georgia except in the minds of those anxious to expel Russia from the Caucasus, North and South, and transparently have been included as they are targets of designs by U.S. empire builders to further encircle, weaken and ultimately dismantle the Russian Federation.

Russian political leadership has been reserved if not outright compliant over the past decade when the U.S. and NATO attacked Yugoslavia, invaded Afghanistan and set up military bases throughout Central and South Asia, invaded Iraq in 2003, assisted in deposing governments in Yugoslavia, Georgia, Adjaria, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan to Russia's disadvantage and brazenly boasted of plans to drive Russia out of the European energy market.

U.S. to Resume Training Georgian Troops

The United States is resuming a combat training mission in the former Soviet republic of Georgia to prepare its army for counterinsurgency operations in Afghanistan, despite the risks of angering Russia, senior Defense Department officials said Thursday.
