THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"The Guatemalan revolution is entering its third decade. Ever since the government of Jacobo Arbenz was overthrown in 1954, the majority of the Guatemalan people have been seeking a way to move the country towards solving the same problems which were present then and have only worsened over time. The counterrevolution, put in motion by the U.S. Government and those domestic sectors committed to retaining every single one of their privileges, dispersed and disorganized the popular and democratic forces. However, it did not resolve any of the problems which had first given rise to demands for economic, social and political change. These demands have been raised again and again in the last quarter century, by any means that seemed appropriate at the time, and have received each time the same repressive response as in 1954." -- Statement by the Guatemalan Army of the Poor, 1981

That day has finally come, and Russia is vindicated. Its story has not changed and is holding up, while Saakashvili's version is collapsing. Medvedev's credibility is rising.

RUSSIAN ANALYST PREDICTS DECLINE AND BREAKUP OF USA

A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily IZVESTIA published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse."

Medvedev's Venezuela, Cuba trips set to rile U.S.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visits to Venezuela and Cuba during a week-long trip to Latin America look set to irk Washington, highlighting a foreign policy challenge facing President-elect Barack Obama.

His trip to Venezuela, a key buyer of Russian arms, coincides with the two countries' first joint naval exercise in the Caribbean -- traditionally viewed by the United States as its backyard.

During his stay in Cuba, the Russian leader is likely to demonstrate Moscow's commitment to renew a Cold War-era alliance with Havana, abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Well, let us be honest, it is the continuing cold-war US embargo of Cuba and belligerence towards Venezuela which has opened this door for Russia to step in.

Had the US used the opportunity of the collapse of the USSR to establish normal relations with Cuba, it would be Russia left out in the cold here. The same with South America; if the US had worked with Hugo Chavez instead of constantly trying to overthrow him, Russia would not have a toe hold in this hemisphere.

The problem with the US Government is that they have not gotten the message yet that the old cold-war methods DO NOT WORK ANY MORE!

Reemergence of Russia as superpower

Russia's resurgence as a strategic actor and a new cold war player is widely discussed in the United Kingdom and Asia. Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin during his presidency made unbelievable economic and military progress. Russia's new policy direction - and particularly its nascent interest in alternative energy - is important because Russia is such a large energy exporter.

Russia links arms control treaty to NATO expansion

Russia, which is fiercely opposed to NATO's expansion toward its borders, suspended its compliance with the CFE treaty last December but remains a signatory.

Moscow says the treaty, designed to limit battlefield weapons, such as tanks and armoured vehicles, on either side of the old Iron Curtain, is a Cold War relic which gives too much scope for an enlarged NATO to beef up its forces.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Russia sees itself encroached economically and militarily by NATO.

It also has seen the outcome of US training of Georgian soldiers shortly before Georgia's colossally stupid military misadventure in South Ossetia.

West’s Readiness to Admit Georgia Launched S.Ossetia War is Step to Reconciliation with Russia

Readiness of the West to admit that the August conflict in South Ossetia was started by the Georgian troops, will assist in establishment of relations with Russia, whilst will not change opinion of the Western community on Russia’s disproportionate answer to actions of Georgia.

“The problem is whether Russia proportionally or disproportionately responded toward Georgia’s launching military actions,” Leon Aron, an American political scientist, said.

U.S. concedes Georgia attack attack in South Ossetia was a mistake

The U.S. State Department said Friday the Georgian attack in South Ossetia last August was a mistake, but that it did not justify Russia's large-scale intervention. The comments follow a critical newspaper assessment of the Tbilisi government's role in the crisis.

Webmaster's Commentary:

I suppose we are now to congratulate the State Department for its magnificent grasp of the obvious.

Apparently, somewhere in Sakashvilli's calculations, he believed that he could absolutely count on support from the West (which had trained and equipped his army) should this military misadventure, began by Georgia's army, go absolutely completely wrong.

If the US and Sakashvilli didn't understand Russia's lightning-fast and intense military reaction to Georgia's invasion of South Ossetia, they were either guilty of magical thinking (which excludes logic, history, and an understanding of military capabilities) , or completely out of their minds to believe that such an outcome was not only possible, but probable.

Oh, and to that that last statement about "...the United States pledged $1 billion to support the country's economic recovery. "

Russia's Medvedev criticises U.S. over Georgia

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev criticised the United States in his first annual address to the nation on Wednesday, blaming "selfish" U.S. foreign policy for Moscow's war with Georgia.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Medvedev is correct. The US was (is?) planning war with Iran, and because of the pact between Iran and Russia, together with Russia's stated intentions to support Iran in the event of war, the US feared Russian logistical support to Iran via ground convoy through Georgia. Starting in November of last year, both Israel and the US started supplying arms and training to Georgian troops. The strategists expected that the Ossetia conflict would degrade into a prolonged border clash which would close the passes through the Caucasus mountains, and with expected air superiority over Iran, this would prevent meaningful Russian intervention in the planned war.

Of course, the best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley and the Russians blew through the Georgian troops like they were wet kleenex and the Iran war plan fell apart at that point.
