THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"The Guatemalan revolution is entering its third decade. Ever since the government of Jacobo Arbenz was overthrown in 1954, the majority of the Guatemalan people have been seeking a way to move the country towards solving the same problems which were present then and have only worsened over time. The counterrevolution, put in motion by the U.S. Government and those domestic sectors committed to retaining every single one of their privileges, dispersed and disorganized the popular and democratic forces. However, it did not resolve any of the problems which had first given rise to demands for economic, social and political change. These demands have been raised again and again in the last quarter century, by any means that seemed appropriate at the time, and have received each time the same repressive response as in 1954." -- Statement by the Guatemalan Army of the Poor, 1981

Clinton staffers make up nearly two- thirds of Obama transition team

Some staffers reviewing candidates for jobs they held in Clinton Administration
Exactly where does change end and President Bill Clinton begin?

President-Elect Obama will announce New York Democratic senator Sen. Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State today -- the most public signal of the two primary campaigns' rapprochement. Beneath the surface, the distance between Obama and Clinton has shrunk even further.

Dec 01 08:28

Hillary Should Quit!

Politics surely makes for strange bedfellows. President-elect Barack Obama will officially announce on Monday his choice of New York Senator Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State, a position that will make her the nation's, and the world's, top diplomat. It's an appointment that for some comes as no surprise, as some sort of Obama/Clinton marriage always seemed inevitable. But to others, this decision is sure to be truly unfathomable.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Also unconstitutional.

Article One, Section Six of the U.S. Constitution says:

No Senator or Representative shall, during the Time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil Office under the Authority of the United States which shall have been created, or the Emoluments whereof shall have been increased during such time; and no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office.

Essentially, you cannot take a job if the salary was increased during your current congressional term. And the salary for cabinet officials has gone up in the past year. Even if it is lowered back down, constitutional scholars say that may not be enough to fix the problem.

The question is whether this would be an issue at confirmation - if Clinton is nominated to the post - and who would raise it. Senators traditionally grant their colleagues some deference and it could be considered politics at its worst if Republicans try to block her nomination with this argument. But senators may be loathe to vote for something scholars tell them is unconstitutional.

But the moment Obama makes the nomination, he violates the Constitution.

Obama to name Clinton secretary of state on Monday

President-elect Barack Obama planned to nominate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton as his secretary of state on Monday, transforming a once-bitter political rivalry into a high-level strategic and diplomatic partnership.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Obama Tells Disappointed Supporters: "I Am the Change."

President-elect Barack Obama essentially said Wednesday that he is the change, striving to assure Americans that he'll shake up Washington despite filling his administration with old hands from the Clinton administration and the capital's corridors of power.

"Understand where the vision for change comes from, first and foremost," Obama said. "It comes from me. That's my job, is to provide a vision in terms of where we are going, and to make sure, then, that my team is implementing."

Bones

It is generally considered a courtesy for a newly inaugurated President to overlook any sins of the past incumbent in the interests of 'looking ahead' and in the knowledge that the same good manners will be repeated after his/her own end of term.

The most extreme example of this was Gerald Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon after the latter's ignominious resignation. Arguably necessary for the health of the nation after its 'long nightmare', it was nevertheless handled badly, and Ford paid a price by becoming a one-term President.

Obama’s Birth Certificate Challenger Keeps Going

One of the pillars of Berg's argument is that Obama doesn't have a legally-valid U.S. birth certificate because he was born in Kenya. Obama may delay tax-cut rollback for wealthy

President-elect Barack Obama may consider delaying a campaign promise - to roll back tax cuts on high-income Americans - as part of his economic recovery strategy, two aides said on Sunday.

David Axelrod, the Obama campaign strategist who was chosen to be a senior White House adviser, was asked if the tax cuts could be allowed to expire on schedule after tax year 2010 rather than being rolled back by legislation earlier. "Those considerations will be made," he said on "Fox News Sunday."

Webmaster's Commentary:

At first read, this article will probably piss you off. Not even in office and already Obama is caving on his campaign promises.

BUT, note that nowhere in this article is there a statement by Obama himself. So, one of two things is oging on.

1. Obama's advisers are simply putting out their own agenda, hoping to create a public expectation of what Obama will do in office, in order to coerce certain policies upon him; to box him in politically. If that is the case then Obama needs to get his people back under control.

Or...

2. Obama is using his advisers to float some trial balloons to see what campaign promises he can drop without losing his huge margin of support coming out of the election. If this is true, then Obama has just betrayed a fatal weakness! He thinks America voted for him. personally. We did not. We voted AGAINST continuing the policies of the past that got us into this mess, and we expect and demand change with this new administration.

So far, Obama is looking more and more like business as usual, and if indeed Obama simply picks up where Bush leaves off Obama will quickly find that the frustration and pent-up anger currently focused on Bush will quite easily transfer onto himself.

What the Clinton Appointment Means

The American people are sick and tired of the Bush era, and they are counting the days until Barack Obama is inaugurated. The reasons for this are manifold, of course, but the one that concerns us especially here at Antiwar.com is the vital question of war and peace. American foreign policy had become so relentlessly aggressive, and with such disastrous results, that John McCain's alleged national security credentials were moot. Even if the economy hadn't tanked so spectacularly at a crucial point in the election season, I contend that Obama would've won in a landslide anyway.

So don't think Barack Obama arose from no where. Like every political leader, he simply seized the opportunity that presented itself.

Ron Paul for Treasury?

He's a policy guy, not a banker. This is important because Paul wouldn't have any "former associates" in the banking industry to cover for, sympathize with, or protect. Paulson, on the other hand, can't escape the whiff of insider-ism in everything he's doing. Questions like "Why isn't the bailout being used as originally planned?" and "Why can't we get a clear picture of who's getting the money and who's being turned down?" may have a reasonable answer, but the overall tone
