THOUGHT FOR THE DAY!

"The Guatemalan revolution is entering its third decade. Ever since the government of Jacobo Arbenz was overthrown in 1954, the majority of the Guatemalan people have been seeking a way to move the country towards solving the same problems which were present then and have only worsened over time. The counterrevolution, put in motion by the U.S. Government and those domestic sectors committed to retaining every single one of their privileges, dispersed and disorganized the popular and democratic forces. However, it did not resolve any of the problems which had first given rise to demands for economic, social and political change. These demands have been raised again and again in the last quarter century, by any means that seemed appropriate at the time, and have received each time the same repressive response as in 1954." -- Statement by the Guatemalan Army of the Poor, 1981

Obama announces Clinton, Gates for Cabinet

President-elect Barack Obama announced Monday that Robert Gates would remain as defense secretary, making President Bush's Pentagon chief his own as he seeks to wind down the U.S. role in Iraq. Obama picked former campaign rival Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state.

President-elect Barack Obama is filling his Cabinet at record speed, choosing loyal friends and one-time foes to guide his wartime foreign policy decisions.

Pentagon to Detail Troops to Bolster Domestic Security

The U.S. military expects to have 20,000 uniformed troops inside the United States by 2011 trained to help state and local officials respond to a nuclear terrorist attack or other domestic catastrophe, according to Pentagon officials.

The long-planned shift in the Defense Department's role in homeland security was recently backed with funding and troop commitments after years of prodding by Congress and outside experts, defense analysts said.

Treated Like a Terrorist by the DMV

By Dave Lindorff

The author tries to renew his drivers license and runs afoul of the catch-a-terrorist system in the DMV.

I am not a terrorist.

How can I prove this in these paranoid times? Easy. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles took my $30 payment over the phone to clear what they said was a record of my NY drivers license having once been withdrawn, and informed the National Driver Register in Washington that I'm a good guy deserving of a renewal of my Pennsylvania drivers license.

Let me explain.

Downturn Drives Military Rolls Up

Some of the largest investment firms on Wall Street are gone. The country's auto industry is on the verge of collapse. Banks are shedding jobs. But in these doom-and-gloom times, there is someone who's hiring: your local military recruiter.

The economic downturn and rising unemployment rate are making the military a more attractive option, Pentagon officials say. In some cases, the peace of mind that comes with good benefits and a regular paycheck is overcoming concerns about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which any new enlistee is likely to join.

Webmaster's Commentary:

To those of you who read this site with family members of appropriate military age who are expressing interest in joining the military, please ask them to do a couple of things.

First, make sure that all promises given to them by a military recruiter are in writing. Verbal assurances mean nothing, in the cold process of a recruiter's keeping their numbers up, by any means necessary.

Second, be sure that your family member speaks to a Vet who has seen military engagement in Iraq or Afghanistan before they enlist.

and third, make sure that they talk with a wounded Vet, desperately trying to get the medical and financial benefits they thought they would get when they enlisted, but had the bad luck to forfeit though injury which the military is claiming is "not duty related."

NSA’s reported eavesdropping on Tony Blair causes major rift in U.S.-British intelligence relations

Bush wants history to see him as a liberator of millions

George W. Bush hopes history will see him as a president who liberated millions of Iraqis and Afghans, who worked towards peace and who never sold his soul for political ends.

"I'd like to be a president (known) as somebody who liberated 50 million people and helped achieve peace," Bush said in excerpts of a recent interview released by the White House Friday.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If by "liberation", the man means by enduring bombs, bullets, starvation, ethnic cleansing (as happened in Iraq), illness (from depleted uranium, water-borne diseases and other poisons), displacement leading to death, then, in that case, Bush's statement is chillingly correct.

But a thinking person needs to look at that statement, shake their heads, and ask: is this man so far out of touch with reality that he has not a clue what he and his henchmen have done in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia??

History will render the final judgment on this man's presidency, and that is apt to be justifiably condemnatory, if the whole truth is written about what he and his team have done.

FEATURE-Israel's Lebanon war showcased cluster bomb horrors

Israel inadvertently galvanised an international campaign to ban cluster munitions by hastily raining bomblets over south Lebanon before a U.N.-agreed halt to its 2006 war with Hezbollah fighters could take effect.

Norway initiated negotiations on a treaty outlawing cluster munitions which about 100 nations -- but not Israel, the United States, Russia or China -- are due to sign in Oslo next week.

Webmaster's Commentary:

All too often, kids have no idea these cluster bombs can kill them; if they land close by, before they detonate, children become curious, and start to play with them, as though they were toys.

Then, they're blown to smithereens, body parts landing in a wide scatter pattern on the ground.

Apparently, murdering children in this way is considered perfectly justified and moral by the non-signatory countries.

U.S. sends terror investigators to India

A U.S. investigative team headed to Mumbai on Friday, a State Department official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the U.S. and Indian governments were working out final details of the cooperative effort. The official declined to identify which agency or agencies the team members came from.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Forgive my cynicism, but one has to wonder just what the US team can actually do in this situation better than the Indian intelligence team can. The Indian intelligence apparatus is extremely sophisticated, and capable.

My suspicion is US team is not there to uncover the truth, but manipulate the outcome of these dreadful attacks to serve the US geopolitical agenda.

Hostages found dead at Mumbai Jewish center

Commandos who stormed the Mumbai headquarters of an ultra-orthodox Jewish group found the bodies of five hostages inside, Indian and Israeli rescue officials said, as a fresh battle raged at the luxury Taj Mahal hotel and other Indian forces ended a siege at another five-star hotel.

A delegation from Israel's ZAKA emergency medical services unit entered the building after the raid and reported through an Indian aide that five hostages and two gunmen were dead, a ZAKA spokesman in Israel said. The spokesman had no information on the hostages' identities or whether there were wounded inside.

Webmaster's Commentary:

"A shortage of cheaper Blu-ray players means that the sub-$US300 ($465) machines that are already appearing on US shelves are unlikely to materialize in Europe this Christmas," Screen Digest analyst Richard Cooper said in a report.

Chopra: Attack prompts tough questions

India at this moment has to contain any reactive violence from the fundamentalist Hindus, which is very likely and possible. So India has to condemn that by not blaming local Muslims. They have to identify the exact groups.

And the world has to be very careful that they don't go after the wrong people. Because if you go after the wrong people, you convert moderates into extremists. It happens every time, and retribution against innocent people just because they have the same religion actually aggravates and perpetuates the problem.

...

Webmaster's Commentary:

Chopra is correct. It is the US and Israeli actions directed against ALL Muslims that drives moderates into being extremists. They see clearly and correctly that the US and Israel are not interested in peaceful co-existence. They see what is happening in Gaza, they hear the speeches about the "Clash of civilizations", they know the dirty tricks that are played then blamed on Muslims.

Recent terror attacks in New Delhi on September 13, 2008, raise the questions of who was responsible and for what reason these attacks occurred. Terror attacks in India are not a new phenomenon, however, in their recent past, they can be largely attributed to the actions, finances, training and resources of one organization: The Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
