US-CUBA: Business Support for Dismantling Embargo

If U.S. President-elect Barack Obama wants to begin dismantling Washington’s nearly 50-year-old trade embargo against Cuba, it appears he will have widespread support for doing so.

Webmaster's Commentary:

A 50-year tantrum is long enough.

Obama camp declines comment on reported Castro offer

The Obama transition team declined comment Wednesday on a report that Cuban President Raul Castro might be interested in meeting with the president-elect at Guantanamo Bay, and had told an interviewer Cubans could "send [Obama] home with the American flag that waves over" the U.S. base there.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Think about this carefully, Obama. Cuba has huge gas and oil fields, and your decision will decide whether American or Russian oil companies will get the goodies.

Official: Russians want to search for oil off Cuba

Russia's ambassador to Cuba says his country's oil companies are interested in searching for oil in deep Gulf of Mexico waters off of the Caribbean island.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If it wasn't for the complete idiocy of the US embargo, it could have been the US searching for oil off Cuba.

But calling off the embargo, and giving a chance for trade relations to take their natural course between the US and Cuba?

Oh, no, this government could never do that: that would be logical.

And if you ever get the chance to see the documentary "Tuning with the Enemy", please watch it. It's about a number of musicians and piano technicians attempting to get pianos to Cuba, and tuning pianos which are there (many times eaten through by termites). But it's one of the most honest - and at times, painfully funny - expositions of the state of the embargo you will ever see.

Bolivarian Candidates Win Majority of States

Before the elections, the opposition was hoping to win, at least, 14 state governments, a figure that progressively decreased as the electoral process reached its climax on Sunday.

PSUV Vice President Alberto Muller said that the ruling party will dominate the national geopolitical map, with a clear lead over their rivals in most of the cases.

Castro: U.S. uses al-Qaeda to justify foreign policy

Fidel Castro suggested Sunday that the U.S. government has promoted Americans' fears about al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups to justify its plans for world domination.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Just now figured that out, eh Fidel?

Medvedev's Venezuela, Cuba trips set to rile U.S.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's visits to Venezuela and Cuba during a week-long trip to Latin America look set to irk Washington, highlighting a foreign policy challenge facing President-elect Barack Obama.

His trip to Venezuela, a key buyer of Russian arms, coincides with the two countries' first joint naval exercise in the Caribbean -- traditionally viewed by the United States as its backyard.

During his stay in Cuba, the Russian leader is likely to demonstrate Moscow's commitment to renew a Cold War-era alliance with Havana, abandoned after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Well, let us be honest, it is the continuing cold-war US embargo of Cuba and belligerence towards Venezuela which has opened this door for Russia to step in.

Had the US used the opportunity of the collapse of the USSR to establish normal relations with Cuba, it would be Russia left out in the cold here. The same with South America; if the US had worked with Hugo Chavez instead of constantly trying to overthrow him, Russia would not have a toe hold in this hemisphere.

The problem with the US Government is that they have not gotten the message yet that the old cold-war methods DO NOT WORK ANY MORE!

Firms fined for breaking U.S. blockade of Cuba

Three U.S. firms have been fined more than $43,000 for breaking the U.S. blockade, according to the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), and reported by Notimex.

Webmaster's Commentary:

Enough with this @#$% cold-war era blockade! It just cost the US access to Cuba's oil and gas.

Russian companies will drill for oil and natural gas on and off the island of Cuba

Russian companies will drill for oil and natural gas on and off the island of Cuba. A standing Russian credit line to Cuba for buying Russian wheat and cars is now extended to until 2011. Russia will build new rail lines on Cuban territory. There will also be joint projects in aircraft- and shipbuilding.

Webmaster's Commentary:

If the US had lifted the embargo years ago, it would be American oil companies drilling off of Cuba.

Chalk up another foreign policy disaster for the pig-headed US Government and its obsolete cold-war mentality.

Massive UN vote in favour of lifting US embargo on Cuba

The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly for the 17th year in a row on Wednesday to demand an end to the 46-year-old US
trade embargo on communist-ruled Cuba, with only three countries saying no.

"The real reason the Cuban economy is in terrible condition and that so many Cubans remain mired in poverty is that Cuba's regime continues to deny its people their basic human and economic rights," he told the General Assembly.
